When the rare sunny day comes along (and even when it doesn't), Anchorage puts on its outdoorsmen's hat. Nestled between the Chugach Mountains and the ocean, the city is ideally situated for outdoor play. On Flattop Mountain, blueberry-pickers, trail-runners, dog-walkers and even the occasional moose test themselves against the steep climb to the summit (or linger on the gentler, bottom slopes). In the city center, bikers, walkers and rollerbladers stretch their legs on the 11-mile Tony Knowles Coastal Trail that rims the city. You can't walk very far downtown without passing at least one bike rental place.

ALASKA CRUISETOURS

Nestled between mountains and the Cook Inlet terminus, near many national and state parks, this hospitable haven is one of the best places to see Alaska wildlife. A city moose roaming the streets (there are about 1,500) is a regular sight and views of whales, puffins, otters, and Dall porpoises going about their days is just a short excursion away. Cruises to Anchorage are a must for those that want some of the most incredible bear viewing in the country.

Roundtrip Seattle cruises sail north out of Puget Sound, through the Salish Sea near Victoria, British Columbia, and into the Pacific Ocean. The first full day is spent at sea, either cruising the open ocean or winding through the protected waters of the Inside Passage. Most cruises visit Juneau and Ketchikan with a third shore day in either Skagway or Sitka. Between ports of call, cruises spend at least a day exploring some of Southcentral Alaska's most stunning tidewater glaciers. Cruise ships make a final stop in posh Victoria, British Columbia, before returning to Seattle.

Don't pass up an opportunity to watch these giants feed and play in the water. In Alaska, ancient rivers of ice wind between mountains and grind out of valleys. Towering walls of ice like the Hubbard Glacier, Endicott Arm Dawes and the twin Sawyer Glaciers thunder as they calve massive icebergs. Some shore excursions allow up close interaction with these natural wonders. All four ships are loaded with all sorts of gee-whiz family attractions, from bumper car pavilions and skydiving simulators on the Royal Caribbean vessels to go-kart tracks and laser tag courses on the Norwegian ships.

When planning a trip to Alaska, many travelers wonder if it's better to explore the state by land or by sea. A concierge service at both terminals provides luggage storage and local area information on cruise days. The Port of Seattle also offers complimentary luggage transfers to the airport through a program called Port Valet. At the end of their voyage, enrolled passengers' luggage is taken to the airport and checked to the final ticketed destination (on participating airlines). This convenient free service lets cruisers enjoy Seattle luggage-free and skip the checked bag lines at the airport. The port does not offer a cruise terminal or any facilities, as it's mainly an industrial port with very little cruise ship traffic.
